Wax Tips from Stussi Sport
Ahh spring skiing at Sovereign Lake – but wait it’s only February! This winter has proven to be a waxing challenge for a lot of Nordic skiers. So to help you figure out what might get you to the top of Aberdeen or quickly down to the cabin, we offer some advice from the wax room at Stussi’s. First thing to do is check the webcam at Sovereign Lake and scroll down to look at the information on the weather station. This gives you a great starting point to figure out what will work for the day. You can also check to see if there has been any fresh snow as this can have a huge impact on your wax selection. Sovereign Lake tends to have high humidity as well so remember to factor that into the wax equation. Okay now you have all the information you need to head to your wax kit and pull out the magic formula.
We’ll talk about grip wax first and this seems to be the area that more people struggle with. All the various wax companies label their grip waxes with a range of temperature and most will show the range for new snow or old snow. Once you know the temperature, humidity and whether there is new snow you can then check the wax label to make your choice and start applying your wax.
One thing that people tend to do with their wax is not apply it correctly –they choose the correct wax for the day but then either don’t put on enough layers or don’t cork it in smoothly. You should be putting on between three to five layers of wax (depending upon the stiffness of your skis) and corking each layer smooth between applications. Know where your wax pocket is so that you can apply the first two layers full length of the pocket and then shorter up the final layers. Go out and test for grip before you add another layer or switch. If you have too much snow sticking to your skis then you have waxed too warm and will need to select the next coldest wax and apply this wax in one or two light layers. If you are getting no grip and the wax is icing up, then you have waxed too cold and you need to add in a slightly warmer wax on top. Sometime though you just can’t get the right grip.. That’s when you need to come into Stussi’s and get a Zero ski. (But that’s a lot other story…)
Glide waxing for classic and skate skis can also be a bit of a challenge as well when there are fluctuations in the temperature and snow conditions, especially when there is a bit of melting and then freezing or fresh snow which has been the case this year. The biggest mistake we skiers make is not changing our glide wax enough – the more you ski, the more wax you lose. The less wax in your skis, the slower they glide. In an ideal world you are waxing your skis every couple of times you ski. In the real world we know some of you only wax a couple of times a year!
Stussi Sport offers wax clinics throughout the year to go over the wax process and take some of the mystery out of how to prepare your skis for maximum enjoyment. Check out the schedule online at http://www.stussisport.com or drop into the store to sign up!
Race Report
On Friday January 14 2011, the coaches, and parents of the Sovereign Lake Junior Development Program headed up to Prince George to compete in the first BC Cup of 2011. With blizzard-like conditions and frigid temperatures of -22°C upon arrival, there was concern about the races on Saturday being postponed or even worse, cancelled. Fortunately, the event organisers from the Otway Nordic Centre changed the format for Saturday’s racing from sprinting to a short distance skate race and postponed the start until early afternoon in order for the temps to rise. Unfortunately, the temperatures only rose to -17°C which meant the pee-wee categories had to be cancelled. :( However, the rest of the team soldiered on through the bone chilling cold and proved that they are some tough skiers posting some great results.
After some well deserved hot chocolate and a nice hot shower, everyone unthawed and was hoping for a warmer day on Sunday. Little did they know what Mother Nature had in store…
How about waking up to 30cm of fresh snow!!! Yep, this weekend was a true depiction of a classic Canadian winter, cold and snowy.
So the team drove up to Otway on Sunday morning ploughing through the snow on the road as though it was the ski trail! With everyone arriving safe and sound to the race site, it was time to prepare for the middle distance classic races. The temperatures did rise to -12°C so everyone was able to race, however the snow didn’t let up all morning which made for some super soft classic tracks. Once again the Sovereign team raced their hearts out and tore up the Otway trails through ankle-deep chewed up hills and snow covered tracks. With stellar results from all, everyone was in a great mood following their races.
All in all, it was a great weekend with plenty of cold noses and laughs. A big thank you goes out to the coaches and parents for all their help and support throughout the weekend.
Stay tuned for results and reactions from the Sovereign Team at the Western Canadian Championships/BC Cup #2 on Feb 4-6.

Training Tips
At this time of year you most likely have been on snow enough times to be feeling pretty confident on your skis. So aside from the occasional "snow snake" making you slip a fall for no reason, how is it that some athletes continue to improve
week to week?
Focus. Not even the kind of focus where an athlete blocks out the whole world for hours a week seeing, hearing and feeling nothing but white noise. Simply the type of focus where they consciously pick one skill that will help them improve and make performing that skill an unconscious habit. Most of these gains come during easy skis.
Here are a few simple tips that you can focus on during your slow easy skis and hopefully make subtle improvements each week.
