MWC in Falun, Sweden

March 03, 2010

Sovereign Lake sent a delegation of 4 to the recent Masters World Cup in Falun Sweden. There were also two local participants at the event Garry Mitchell and club member John Davina.

Our visit to the “Kingdom of Skiing” was a tremendous learning experience as well as a huge opportunity to promote both Sovereign Lake and our Sparkling Hill, Masters World Cup which will take place between March 3rd and 11th 2011.

After 3 years of planning, organizing and promoting the 2011 event it appears we could be hosting record numbers next March, possibly reaching greater than 1500.  Sovereign Lake and Silver Star Mountain Resort have garnered amazing reputations both overseas and in the United States since our re-exposure to the Cross Country Ski world during the 2005 World Cup events. Word of mouth has also spread quickly from international teams who have been using our facility for World Cup training.  The racing community overseas is buzzing in anticipation of the 2011 event at what has become recognized as “one of the best cross country ski area’s in the world.”

Our delegation consisted of Bruce and Neva Cummings, Sharon Clarke and Scott Lemon. Each of us had specific jobs during the trip, all designed to ensure that visitors to our area will have an amazing skiing and tourism experience during their time on our mountain and in the City of Vernon. Great insight was gained by all regarding event organization, tourism planning, transportation requirements, and of course promotion of our amazing ski area.

It was great to be part of such an amazing and unique event and the masters world cup is truly unique since the only qualification required is that you be over the age of 30 and have the desire to participate…”Racers” range from recreational participants just seeing if they can make the distance to those who are there going for the gold. This range of ability and goals creates an atmosphere that would be hard to match at any other cross country ski event. Each participant has the opportunity to participate in up to 3 races of varying length as well as the opportunity represent their country as part of a 4 person relay team.

Local Support has been incredible for our event…Sparkling Hill resort got us off the ground by signing on as the “Title Sponsor”, since then Subaru, Kal Tire, the City of Vernon, NORD, The Prestige Hotel and Silver Star Mountain Resort, have all signed o as major sponsors, with several others to be added to our list of supporters very soon We thank them all for their support of both our Club and the Sparkling Hill Masters World Cup.
