Lars Flora and Holly Brooks took first place positions today at the Sovereign Lake Haywood NorAm and Teck Sprints. With a fresh snowfall overnight, today’s distance freestyle athletes found conditions to be that suited the winning athletes.

“The conditions were great. I was pretty impressed with how much snow we got last night, but yet, how good the conditions were. I thought we might be mid shin in powder but the conditions were wonderful. It was kind of hard packed in the middle and a bit soft on the side. It was really fast and great conditions for the race today,” said Brooks.

“The conditions definitely fit me well,” said Flora, “When I saw the forecast last night, and it started snowing around dinner, I was pretty psyched. I’m pretty sure, my first race ever, in 99, was just like this,” said Flora.

The racers were pleased with their races and results. Brooks described her race, “I had a great race. I came in with a pretty good result… I like racing here.”

“My strategy was to ski smooth and efficient on the first lap and kind of attack on the last lap. It’s not a course that you can attack from the start, otherwise you will die pretty hard, especially that second hill on the second climb,” said Brooks.

After the classic sprints yesterday, Flora was tired going into today’s race. “Warm up your always pretty sluggish. The first 5km I went out pretty conservative, but all the splits were showing me in the lead. Then I was just really stable and from there on out never really had any lows in the race, and caught a few guys that started ahead of me. The last lap I found another 15 seconds out there.”

In open men’s category, first place was Lars Flora, APUNSC in 41:39.2 minutes, second Graham Nishikikawa, Whitehorse, third, Brian Gregg, CXC Team. Fourth place went to James Southam, APUNSC and fifth place, Drew Goldsack of NST.
