Fact Sheet #1 - Sovereign Lake Day Lodge
The current day lodge was built in 1992-93 and is 3528 square feet in area. The building has served the club well over this time.
As club membership, numbers of visiting skiers and programs and events have increased, there has been some discussion about the need to expand the day lodge.
Current levels of use have created congestion and operating inefficiencies especially in the rental and main counter areas. Staff report that customer service is severely compromised especially on weekends and holiday periods. This is being reflected in customer feedback.
In preparation for this discussion the Board of Directors, in partnership with BC Parks, undertook a series of independent engineering and mechanical studies on the existing building to determine its current status and suitability for expansion.
These studies indicate the following:
The current building was built to 1992 Building Code Standards. Any proposed new addition to the existing structure would trigger compliance with the current building code for the entire structure.
Bringing the existing building up to current code would be costly as it would entail significant upgrades to the structure and mechanical systems.
The electrical system has reached its maximum capacity for space and load and would require major upgrades to support any significant additions or mechanical system improvements.
BC Parks has expressed interest in partnering with the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club in the construction of a new day lodge which would more fully meet the needs of park users, the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club and BC Parks. Silver Star Provincial Park annually provides over 50,000 user days of recreation is viewed a premiere winter recreation destination within the province.
